Easy DIY Evergreen Swag to Transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas
HOLI-GO-FABULOUS! Learn how to make the evergreen swag we demonstrated at Mpls St. Paul Magazine’s fantastic holiday Home & Design event at the Westin Galleria.
We love creating multi-purpose floral decor that can take you from the Thanksgiving dinner table all the way through the Christmas/winter season. Here are some simple DIY instructions for how to create one of our favorites - an easy evergreen swag.
Materials
Evergreen branches - we love cedar and magnolia. We also used white pine and variegated oregonia. Available from your local nursery or tree lot.
Zip ties.
Seasonal ribbon - wire edge is best.
Wire - any thin gauge wire will work. Paper coated floral bind wire is easiest to work with.
Instructions
Assemble your evergreen branches. Layer from longest (on bottom) to shortest (on top).
Insert a zip tie around and through the branches. Secure it tightly and trim off the excess length.
Hide the zip tie with a simple ribbon or by attaching a designer bow with wire. Use the extra ends of the wire to form into a loop for hanging. You’re ready to decorate!
Option 1 - You can lay one on each side of a pumpkin centerpiece (with optional floral topper) down the center of your dining table for your Thanksgiving centerpiece.
Option 2 - Use it to decorate the back of a chair. Attach with pins, ribbon, or wire depending on chair type.
Option 3 -Hang it on your front door to welcome guests.
Option 4 - After Thanksgiving, simply change out the bow to your favorite color holiday theme and you are ready for Christmas or winter!
The evergreens will slowly dry out over several days if left inside. If you hang it on your outside door or store it in a cold garage, it will stay fresh longer and can be reused for your holiday table.
